Project Description

Background of Client

ANNE CARLSEN CENTER – Jamestown ND

The Anne Carlsen Center for Children offers a rich tradition of residential, therapeutic and educational services all on one centralized campus. Their individualized services include care for children and young adults with cerebral palsy; orthopedic, vision and hearing impairments; autism, pervasive and other behavior disorders; and many other medical challenges.

The Anne Carlsen Center nurtures individuals with physical, mental and health impairments through creative combinations of special education and training, therapy, supportive medical care and, above all else, the unconditional love, understanding and sense of belonging every child longs for and deserves.

The Anne Carlsen Center uses sensory integration which is especially important for children with special needs. They are one of only a handful of facilities in the country to use state-of-the-art technology in specially designed white and black rooms to engage and stimulate senses of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.

•The Anne Carlsen Center for Children uses advanced integration techniques to enhance traditional therapies for students with visual and hearing deficits, autism and behavior disorders.

•The White Room and Black Room utilize a multitude of lighting effects for visual stimulation, relaxation and interaction. Bubble columns, a vibrating mat, tactical board, and sound box are just a few of the features found in these rooms.

•The Sensory Motor Center is also home to an accessible indoor jungle-themed tree house and water and sand center where children can experience the freedom and fun of climbing trees, sliding, building sandcastles and splashing in water.

Problem Description

In the Sensory Motor Center room at the Anne Carlsen Center they have an indoor jungle-themed tree house. In the jungle-themed room we plan to have different types of animal sounds, including an elephant, a lion, and a monkey, that will be triggered to play by lifting one of the carpet panels installed on the sides of the walls. There will be painted pictures of these animals under the carpet panels corresponding to the animal sound that will be played. When the child lifts one of the carpet panels and sees the animal picture on the wall underneath, the animal sound will play from a speaker hidden nearby. Another possibility with our project will be triggering a jungle-themed background sound as the child enters the area, which will depend on time allowed.

Requirements / Parts List

  • Power for the system: Wall Outlet: access to 120V AC power outlet
  • Storage for the digital animal sounds: Memory external to the DSP
  • Digital Signal Processor to process the digital data at appropriate times: Microchip dsPIC30F4013
  • External Triggers (input from the child): Cherry Switch MP201801 which is a magnetic proximity sensor normally open
  • Audio Amplifier: simple circuit using a LM3876 overture chip built by National Semiconductor
  • Speakers: Pioneer TS-G1341R, two 5 ¼ inch Pioneer 130 watt 2-way standard high quality speakers
  • Robust Equipment: The equipment used for the display and speaker must be robust because children play rough with toys
